An open laptop on top of a table displaying a daily note template in Obsidian

I’ve been using Obsidian for a few months and it has completely changed the way that I organize my day. Lately, my focus has been to optimize my work hours and prioritize tasks that align with my goals. In order to accomplish this, I have created a series of daily routines that aim to remove the following questions from my day: “what should I do now?” and “what should I do next?

Time-blocking and using my daily note have been game-changers for me.

How I use my daily note:

  1. The Morning Routine: Before I touch my phone & computer, I begin every day with my morning routine. This is my time to take a shower, brew a cup of coffee, brush my teeth, walk my dog, listen to an audiobook, etc. As I’m always working on making the most out of this time, I have it as a linked note to quickly access and update when needed.
  2. Review workload: The last 30 minutes of my workday is reserved to plan out my tasks and time-block for the next day. However, by the time I get to work the next morning, things change. I have new messages from colleagues and my priorities can shift quickly. That’s why, before I respond to any messages or start working on anything, I will review my communication apps and update my task list and calendar accordingly.
  3. Noteworthy: It’s much more likely that I will accomplish my goals if I’m always reminded of them. I have mine here.
  4. Most Important Task (of the day): This might seem obvious, it’s my most important task of the day, but it’s much more than that. It’s what helps me accomplish my goals (one small task at a time). In order for a task to qualify for this section, it must be a task that relates to one of my work or personal goals. No matter what, this one task must be accomplished by the end of every day.
  5. Other Tasks: This is my catch-all for the tasks that I want to accomplish. I also use the time-blocking method in my calendar to schedule time for my tasks.
  6. Notes: Another catch-all for me. I might have impromptu meetings, lessons, ideas, etc. that I want to capture. I write them down here. It saves me time because I don’t have to spend energy figuring out where I should record them. I just write it down, and at the end of every day, I return to my notes and organize them accordingly.
